Consumer Reports - Grocery Store Rankings and Shopping Habits

Consumer Reports - Grocery Store Rankings and Shopping Habits

There was a recent report by Consumer Reports that surveyed over 27,000 people about grocery shopping and how stores ranked. There were several interesting findings worth highlighting since they support the mission of Qponsr regarding - saving money, but also saving time.

  • People shop a lot (88 trips/year) but a majority of people don't enjoy it - 56% of shoppers experienced at least one problem while shopping with Walmart being the worst offender mainly related to: not enough open checkout lanes, congested aisles, or items out of stock.
    • This is part of the reason why it is important to look beyond just saving money, your time is worth something too - something even more valuable.
  • Shoppers changed stores due to: high prices, long waits, inadequate selection, and poor food quality.

  • Summary:
    • Shoppers are trying out other stores to do their grocery shopping for a number of reasons
    • Walmart is not always the cheapest meaning you can go to the regional stores and save you more time to enjoy things you actually want to do (and probably some sanity).
    • There are some interesting features grocers are offering to entice shoppers such as meals to go.
    • Store brands offer a great value, more on that topic over here.
